Chinese vocab is aruably the most difficult thing to learn… ever! It takes time and effort and there are many ways of approaching what might seem like a daunting task. After research, many popular and helpful methods have emerged, such as learning Chinese songs and learning the important radicals to make vocab learning easier! Songs have been known to help as learning the song, then the meaning, can help people recognise certain words and phrases used in a language. There is even a story of a Chinese speaking woman who knew no English but had many American clients, but had little money to hire a tutor, and so bought 10 English music albums, learnt the songs off by heart and their meaning and could speak sufficient English! Also, learning radicals allows vocab learning to be faster, as if you already know the components of the character, it is much easier to remember. My current technique is to try and remember the character from pinyin and keep the strokes in a character in small, easy to remember groups. Then, I learn the tone on the pinyin once i am confident with writing.

Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is a monastery, whose name translates as “temple in the thick forests of Shaoshi Mountain”, describing its location. It was made in 495 A.D by Emperor Xiaowen (孝文帝) to be a home to the Indian master Batuo. This monastery later became know as the place where kung fu originated and Chan Buddhism. Kung fu started when a later abbot found monks were too weak after long meditation and developed martial arts to strengthen them. At its heyday, the temple housed 3000 monks, which is many compared to the alleged 13 monks who saved the future emperor from a whole army!
